Media

Description

Uploading Media

There are two main ways to upload media depending on whether or not you want to adjust permissions for who can view/edit that media.

Upload publically available media

To upload media to the general content library, follow these steps:

  1. Click the “Content” button in the admin menu.

  1. Click the “Media” tab and then click “Add media”.

  1. You now have the option to upload an audio file, document, image, remote video (I.e. hosted on YouTube or Vimeo), svg, or locally hosted video. Select the appropriate media type and upload the media.

This media will not show up on any particular page, but it will be available to use anywhere on the site.

To upload media directly onto a page, note that certain blocks only allow for certain types of media (I.e. a hero image cannot be a video). The most flexible blocks are the blocks that contain HTML friendly text boxes (I.e. the body block) which have a toolbar that can be used to incorporate media into the text.

Upload media with specific permissions

You can control who can view/edit media by uploading it directly to a content item. Files "inherit" the permissions of the content item they are added to. For example, if a content item is only visible to U.S. ATLAS Managers, the files uploaded directly to that page will also only be visible to Managers.

To add a file with restricted permissions, upload it directly to the content item with the appropriate permissions using the "Files" block on the content item.

  • Open the "Files" block and click  "Add file"

  • Click "Choose file" and select a file from your device

  • Add a title, description, and date to the file
  • Toggle the "visible" box depending on how you want to display the file. If the "visible" box is checked, the file will appear in a table in the files block. If the "visible block" is unchecked, you will have to copy the file URL and link to it from the text on another part of the page.

How to link to media

  • Once you have uploaded a file to the general media library or the files block on a page, right (or ctrl) click on the file name to open a menu.
  • Click on the option to copy the link to your clipboard.
  • Navigate to the text you would like to link from. Highlight the text click the "link" button to add a link.
  • Paste the link into the corresponding link field.

Copyright – What content are we allowed to use on the site?

Drupal provides a guide on content and copyright which is provided here.

In general, aim to use original content as often as possible. For images, it is best to use public domain and other open-access sources. A massive list of open-source image databases can be found here.
