Maintenance & Operations

US ATLAS Maintenance & Operations (M&O) oversees the fulfilment of long-term responsibilities to US-constructed parts of the ATLAS detector. This includes installation and commissioning (I&C) activities for newly constructed subdetector components built by the US. M&O funds the activities of experts whose technical knowledge is critical for the efficient functioning of the experiment, complementing the work of students, postdocs, and faculty funded under the Research Program.

M&O covers work in the following systems: the silicon tracking detectors, the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT), the Liquid Argon and Tile calorimeters, the muon detectors, and the trigger and data acquisition system (TDAQ).

Files

Silicon

Responsibilities include the on-detector boards for the optical communication system for the pixel detector, the high voltage and current monitoring systems for the pixel detector, support for the read out drivers for the pixel and SCT, and planning for the eventual decommissioning of the inner detector.

TRT

Responsibilities include the TRT data acquisition hardware, firmware, and software, as well as long-term monitoring

Liquid Argon (LAr)

Responsibilities include the readout electronics, optical data transmission paths, and trigger interface hardware, the low voltage power supplies for the electronics, the high voltage system for the detector, and studies of the expected performance of the forward calorimeters in HL-LHC conditions.

TileCal

Responsibilities include maintenance of the readout and control electronics, the low voltage power supplies, and calibration software and database support.

Muon

Responsibilities include the endcap spectrometer alignment, maintenance and calibration of the monitored drift tubes, and installation and commissioning of the New Small Wheel and BIS7/8 detector systems including readout and trigger hardware and firmware.

Trigger/DAQ

Responsibilities include development and operation of the data acquisition software and online monitoring tools, the core software trigger code, development/commissioning of key elements of the Phase I DAQ and calorimeter hardware trigger upgrades (FELIX, HUB, FOX, and gFEX), and planning for the HL-LHC software trigger architecture.
