Software & Computing

The ATLAS detector produces a large dataset that, combined with simulated data, is used to produce hundreds of cutting-edge physics results. Major software and computing infrastructure is necessary to acquire, manage, store, process and analyze these large amounts of data. US ATLAS plays an essential role in every aspect of ATLAS Computing and Software.

US Computing Facility

The US ATLAS Facility provides approximately 23% of the computing and storage resources used worldwide by the ATLAS computing grid, as well as additional resources dedicated to US ATLAS Physicists.

Software

US ATLAS has led core software development in ATLAS , including the design and the development of the athena/Gaudi software framework, the ATLAS event data model, and its persistency mechanism. US ATLAS also has had a leadership role in the ATLAS Distributed Computing organization and developed the PanDA distributed workflow management system.

Research & Development

In the future a major increase in the data to process and the simulations to produce is expected. This poses a major challenge to handle the load on the computing, so R&D is being pursued to meet the needs of the HL-LHC, focusing on areas such as computational technologies, analysis techniques and machine learning.
